Loving loyalty

In some sectors, promotion is not a ladder, it’s a zig-zag. Individuals leave one business and join another in a more senior role. Then, a few years later, another departure and another new business and another step up. It’s relatively high risk (it’s harder to succeed in new cultures and last in, first out remains a watchword to the wise) but the material rewards can be great. And, for the chosen few, promotion can come quickly.

But, much as it pains us as headhunters, some of the very best people we come across have a fierce loyalty to their current position. Even with the prospect of substantially greater remuneration in an amazing role, there’s a moment of hesitation then a simple, ‘I really appreciate your time, and thank you for the suggestion, but I need to finish this. They’ve done o much for me and it wouldn’t be right to leave now.’

This is in no way to denigrate the decisions of others who do apply. Many have spent long years with their current employer and the time might be just right for them. But we’re always slightly suspicious of the CV with progressively more senior roles every 24 months or so (see ‘zig-zag’ above). As are our clients.

So we mark the fiercely loyal candidate with a little ‘L’ in the notes (or a smiley face, or a surprised face) and file them away for another search. Perhaps next time round their unfinished work will be finished. We know they’ll be a fantastic candidate when they’re ready.
